Collectively, they bring 40+ years of experience in education and youth development, and have held countless talks, workshops, and lectures for students, grads and young professionals. This is just a snippet of the kind of individuals you will learn from.
We also have numerous industry professionals that you can get to know throughout the program! You’ll have to chance to connect with experts from various fields from large globally recognized firms to small local startups. Our goal is to connect you with the professional world and get all your career questions answered through guest speakers, workshops, informational interviews and more!
Each session will run from 6pm - 9pm every Thursday for two months and will incorporate discussion, workshops, teamwork, activities, guest speakers and more. After each session, you have until the following session to complete a weekly assignment, which will be based on the topic of that week and is designed to help you apply your learnings. Each assignment is expected to take 2-4 hours to complete.

Informational interviews with a minimum of two professional connections from an industry of your interest.
This is where it all begins. If you’re spending the next 8 weeks together, getting to know one another is key. We’ll focus on some team building, set expectations for the program and really get to know you. You’ll start digging deep into your strengths, interests and values and how they all feed into your career and life. We’ll be discussing assessments (which you’ll take in May before the program begins!) and what you can take away from them. A project will also be assigned.
We’ll continue to access your ‘why’ and discuss what this means. This includes identifying how others perceive us, understanding your superpowers and learning how to build a story in order to create a unique personal brand. You’ll start to crystalize what your core values are and learn how to present your best self with confidence.
Now that you better understand yourself and your values, you’ll need to identify how you can translate this to a clear purpose and vision and set goals around what you want to accomplish. You’ll work on defining your short and long term career goals, and how to build diverse experiences while learning how to incorporate balance, growth, and discipline into your goals.
Time for some real talk. How do you go from being a dreamer to a doer and access career opportunities that are best suited for you? We will discuss how you can explore various career options and learn how to make critical career decisions. You’ll learn about the job market, how to conduct research and navigate different industries, and resources you can utilize to build the necessary skills and experiences to stand out.
Networking is transactional and relationship-building is transformational. Once you’ve identified your career goals, the next step is getting out there, sharing your presence, and forming the right connections. You’ll learn how to meet people, create great first impressions and take part in genuine conversations. You’ll also walk away with tips to navigate the hidden job market and take advantage of informational interviews, job shadowing and mentorship opportunities.
Tell the world by communicating your brand online. This is just as important as in-person interactions. You’ll learn best practices to build a strong online presence, how to maintain a positive relationship with your connections, and translate your purpose into all aspects of your communication. We’ll be hands-on and work on your LinkedIn profile along with any additional digital assets.
We believe in instant application of new skills and learning by doing. You’ll take part in rapid relationship-building with some top local professionals from various industries and organizations in Vancouver. You’ll learn how to practice effective networking, engage in meaningful conversations while gaining insight into different career options and forming solid industry connections. This is also the perfect opportunity to practice your pitch and share your unique story and values.
We will end off by reflecting on all your learnings and what your next steps will be. You’ll be presenting your personal projects and will discuss what you will be doing to continue working towards your purpose and goals. We’ll also present various opportunities to stay connected and build new skills and connections through our community.

The fees can be paid in two installments.

A 30-minute one-on-one interview will be conducted with each applicant either via Skype or in-person. The interview is designed to be a casual conversation to assess where you currently stand and your interest in the program. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions! This will help us ensure the Step Up program is the best fit for you, customize any materials, and create a supportive learning environment.

There are no major prerequisites or prior skills and knowledge required-- our program is designed to help you discover your strengths and develop skills during and after the 8 weeks. You will meet a large network of industry professionals ranging from small to large organizations from diverse industries including technology, finance, marketing, fine arts, operations, design and more. Based on your area of interest, we will also introduce you to professionals that best suit your career goals.

This program is designed to help you feel confident with your career direction and goals. This may lead to a transition or realignment, which we can support you through. To make it easier, we’ve split the cost into two installments. The first installment will be due upon program acceptance on May 7, and the second installment is due on June 5 before the program begins. We understand that everyone’s financial situation is unique. Although we cannot prevent anyone from being sick (take care of yourself!) or any unexpected emergencies, we definitely recommend that all participants attend every session in order to maximize your learning. As it is an 8-week program and a new topic is introduced each week, you will get the most benefit by attending every session and connecting with everyone in the room.
These topics were chosen based on numerous conversations with companies, professionals, educators and of course, students! Many recent graduates do not feel prepared for the job market after post-secondary and hiring managers agree. In order to be confident with your career direction, you need to fully understand yourself, your network and the industry, and be able to communicate this effectively to others. We’re here to bridge the gap between education and career readiness and help you become more self-aware while building the necessary connections to understand career options, industry trends, and job prospects at an earlier stage.
